Friday 11 July: TB scare, 'State of the City' report and Barton denied early release

Published on July 11th 2008.

A TB scare has hit Manchester Metropolitan University. Over 150 former students are being traced by health officials to be tested. So far 20 people have tested positive and five are being treated. The first case reportedly came from a final-year textile student who may have got the illness after a member of her family returned from a holiday overseas.

MANCHESTER'S STATE OF THE CITY report was published this week. The second edition of the annual document measures the city’s current performance, how residents’ quality of life is being improved and where challenges remain. Evidence from the report will be used to help city leaders prioritise future improvements. According to the report, Manchester’s economy is booming, making it the UK’s fastest growing city economically and the number of people living in the city is expected to reach 476,800 by 2015.

CANAL STREET is to undergo safety improvements. Earlier this year, a man fell to his death at the canal side in the Gay Village. City centre managers, Cityco, have now drawn up a programme of improvement works including lights to illuminate the canal and tow path. There is also plans for a 4ft guard rail to prevent people climbing or sitting on the canal wall.

JOEY BARTON has been refused early release on an electronic tag. Probation officers at Strangeways decided against allowing the disgraced ex-City footballer to be freed on a home detention curfew. Barton must now finish his six-month sentence which ends on August 13.
