Thursday 4 December: Voting turnout revealed, badge abuse and double home games causes congestion

Published on December 4th 2008.

CONGESTION CHARGE POLLING PROGRESS information has been revealed today. So far the turnout of voters has been 13.5 percent in Manchester, 21.3 percent in Bolton, 27.3 percent in Bury, 27.9 percent in Oldham, 23.3 percent in Rochdale, 26.6 percent in Salford, 26.6 percent in Stockport, 28.3 percent in Tameside, 20.1 percent in Trafford and 18 percent in Wigan. More than 1.94 million ballot packs have been issued to voters across the region. People have until 10pm on 11 December to return their completed ballot papers.

A DISABLED BADGE CHEAT who used her dead mother's blue badge to park her car in a disabled space has said she only used the pass because it was the last photo she had of her mother. She told Manchester magistrates: “My mum's badge was in the car so I could think she was still there.” She was ordered to pay £290.

MANCHESTER'S ROAD NETWORK came to a standstill last night as City and United played simultaneous home games for the first time in over five years. City drew 0-0 with Paris St Germain at Eastlands, while United beat Blackburn 5-3 at Old Trafford. The games caused gridlock traffic across the city as workers tried to get home and four sets of fans travelled to the matches.

OVERNIGHT SNOWFALL has caused several schools across Lancashire, Cumbria and Greater Manchester to close today as well as delaying traffic. Rochdale Council has urged all 92 of its schools to shut today. The Met Office has also warned motorists to only make necessary journeys and to take care when driving.

re Lloyd Street Camera: when we enquired about the camera at the Whitworth Sackville Street junction which is not 'labelled' with a notice nor on the Police Traffic Cameras List we got various explanations from detecting unlicensed cars to jumping the lights. What are these secret cameras for?

why would they put the monitoring kit in now when charging wouldnt start untill 2013? - I think Zabzy is spreading silly inacurate gossip.

Jay that doesnt suprise me actually. Along with the totally unbiased tv "commercials" about the charge. By the way its going to go ahead anyway as if you look on Lloyd Street South you will see they have already put the monitoring equipment up!!!

The Manchester road network comes to a standstill with enough time for people to still post their conjestion charge ballot papers, hmmmmmmm. Didn't Red Ken change the sequences of the traffic lights around London before the C charge was introduced in order to make the roads more conjested?
