Tuesday 13 May: Bang out of order, airport gets secure and Sven sympathises

Published on May 13th 2008.

B OF THE BANG has reportedly cost taxpayers up to £300,000 in repair costs since it was built. Thousands are to be spent on legal fees by the city council, who are taking the makers of the sculpture to court on November 24. The £1.42m steel artwork was designed by Thomas Heatherwick to commemorate the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT has introduced hassle-free security screening. £2.2m has been spent on the full-colour x-ray machines which show 3D images of luggage as well as vapour-testing machines which detect unauthorise liquids. The system has been introduced to Terminal 1 and is expected to be expanded to Terminals 2 and 3.

A SALE MAN has been fined for claiming he had been burgled when in fact he had locked himself out of his own home. The 47-year-old locked himself out of his house on Beenham Close when he was drunk and then broke in. Police believe he said he had been the victim of a burglary so he could make an insurance claim. He was fined £80 after finally admitting the false report.

CITY BOSS Sven-Goran Eriksson has spoken of his sympathy for goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson following the 8-1 mauling against Middlesbrough. He said: “I think he was very unlucky. If we are professional we shouldn’t allow a defeat by so many goals. It was one of those days were nothing went right. I’m sorry for the fans who came to support us as usual.”
