Monday 17 November: Three killed in chase, nearly a million visitors for Manchester and Fergie loses Lowry bid

Published on November 17th 2008.

THE TOURISM INDUSTRY contributed £5.6bn to the Greater Manchester economy in 2007 according to figures released today by Visit Manchester. Manchester also remained the third most popular destination in the UK during 2007, with 971,000 international visitors. Paul Simpson, managing director of Visit Manchester, the tourist board for Greater Manchester, said: “Whilst these are very encouraging figures, the statistics represent a period before the current economic downturn. However, they highlight what the sector brings to the table in the success of the city-region.”

THREE PEOPLE have died in Greater Manchester this weekend following after their car crashed into a wall in a police pursuit. A police patrol stopped the Vauxhall Vectra after it ran a red light in Oldham, before starting a pursuit when the driver drove off at high speed. Blackley MP and Confidential columnist Graham Stringer has now called for an inquiry into the number of deaths in Greater Manchester Police high-speed chases.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON lost out on a bidding war for an LS Lowry painting. Ferguson's bid of £14,000 was beaten by City fan and millionaire businesswoman Carole Nash who bid £23,000. The painting of a curious dog was started by Lowry who died in 1976, but later finished by his friend Harold Riley.

CRISTIANO RONALDO reached and then surpassed a century of United goals against Stoke City on Saturday. He told MUTV: “One hundred goals is a great achievement. I have 101 for this club now. This is my sixth season here so I think that is fantastic.”

Sorry dave but to get in a car with such a person, and not make efforts to stop him from driving recklessly, says just as much about them.

"Vile adults"? You might make a judgement about the driver but not any of the others, surely?

That's correct Dave, the 3 passengers may well have been asking the driver to stop. As for enquiries in to police handleing of car 'chases' what do people want the police to do let all criminals carry on commiting crime just in case there is a chase!! The police have a hard enough job to do without the thought in the back of their minds that they will be blamed for someone being hurt or killed while trying to stop or prevent crime.

No sympathy at all for the three Oldam drivers - if you fail to stop, then drive recklessly and dangerously to evade the police, you get what you ask for. At least these vile adults didn't take anyone with them.

Quote:"with 971,000 international visitors"Many can be seen selling the Big Issue, handing out freebies or generally just hanging about in the centre most week-days.

even more disgusting that Graham Stringer MP "has now called for an inquiry into the number of deaths in Greater Manchester Police high-speed chases" - this is NOT a points-winning-political issue......

You can judge the measure of a man by his friends so they say, I certainly hope I'm not friends with anyone that would opt for a high speed chase instead of a £30 ticket. Sad that they all died though, it'd be interesting to have an inquiry into why they drove off before looking for more ways to run down (no pun intended) the police.

Third most popular destination after where? London and Edinburgh?
