Thursday 17 December: Cockroaches in the cooking oil, slug pellets in the curry, and World Cup could be coming to Manchester

Published on December 17th 2009.

A COCKCROACH-INFESTED CHINESE RESTAURANT has been fined £70,000 by a magistrate who called its hygiene standards “absolutely outrageous”. Inspectors were called to the Tai Pan restaurant on Upper Brook Street after a diner found a cockroach in her food. Manchester Magistrates’ Court was told the creepy-crawlies were found all over the kitchen, including dead ones in the oil. The owners of the restaurant were found guilty of 14 counts of violating the Food Hygiene Act in their absence.

A MAN HAS ADMITTED PLOTTING TO POISON HIS NEIGHBOURS by lacing a curry with slug pellets. Gareth Stewart, 37, took the dish to the home of his next-door neighbours, Ann Marie Walton and Beverley Sales, in Alexandra Road, Denton, claiming he had ordered too much from an Indian takeaway. Rather than tuck-in, the neighbours called the police. Experts found it had been spiked with slug and snail pesticide. Stewart pleaded guilty to two charges of attempting to poison the women at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.

MANCHESTER WILL BE A HOST CITY FOR ENGLAND’S World Cup 2018, if the bid is successful. Both Old Trafford and Eastlands will be used, the FA confirmed yesterday, with council bosses saying hosting matches could be worth £80m to the city.

A MAN WAS INJURED AFTER BEING HIT BY A SCHOOL COACH in the city centre. The victim was trapped underneath the vehicle, which was carrying a group of schoolchildren, on Lever Street. The man is being treated for serious injuries at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Haha - I love it "At Tai Pan you can tell that the kitchen knows what it’s doing, is under tight control, but that alone is never enough in a restaurant visit." - JS on Tai Pan last December. Things had obviously seriously gone bad in 7 months, the 11/20 review was poor enough. Very disturbing.

Agree with johnthebrief. Perhaps the truth behind this piece of This 'n That wisdom was too close for comfort at ManCon Towers?

I think you've been a bit mean on the wisdom rating today. I quite liked that one
