Friday 4 July: MPs keep it in the family, Library Theatre homeless and Gallagher to record with Jay-Z?

Published on July 4th 2008.

FIVE MPs in Greater Manchester have employed their wives, on salaries of up to £40,000, according to reports. The wives have been recruited in Parliament by their husbands as office managers, parliamentary assistant and senior research assistant in Bolton, Bury, Heywood, Middleton, Altrincham and Sale West. MPs are now urged to declare whether they employ family members, following recent scandal over expenses.

MANCHESTER'S LIBRARY THEATRE is looking for a new home. The venue, which is 50-years-old currently occupies the basement of Central Library but needs to relocate due to refurbishment on the site. Council chiefs are now scouting possible new venues. Meanwhile the library and town hall will undergo a £150m upgrade which will include an underground car park.

AN ECO-MOSQUE is opening in Levenshulme. The first of its kind in Manchester, the mosque has been built with wood from renewable sources and reclaimed stone. The building replaces the Al-Markaz Al Najmi mosque on Woodfold Avenue. The new mosque officially opens on Sunday with a special religious ceremony.

OASIS are to be awarded with a lifetime achievement prize at the Silver Clef awards tonight. The Mancunian band will follow previous winners, Paul Weller and U2 in receiving the prestigious award. It's also rumoured that rapper Jay-Z plans to record with Noel Gallagher despite the rocker criticising his Glastonbury Festival headline slot. Jay-Z told MTV: “I haven't spoken to him (but) I heard he was reaching out... I don't bear any grudge, it's all good.”

'The new mosque officially opens on Sunday with a special religious ceremony'. A religious ceremony in a mosque? How queer. Hope it's not Quaker.
