Tuesday 1 December: Warnings over council tax scam, Morrissey says suicide is “honourable” and public vote on punishments for young offenders

Published on December 1st 2009.

THE LABOUR PARTY HAS pledged a stronger role for the North West Development Agency, although a change in government would see it axed. Lord Mandelson announced that regional development agencies would become a "vital bridge" between businesses and universities, helping economic recovery. The Conservatives have said they will scrap RDAs if they win the general election.

THE PUBLIC HAS BEEN WARNED over the telephone-based 'rebate' scam. Homeowners are being asked to send the caller their credit card or bank account details so the money can be refunded for overpaid council tax. Valuation Office Agency officials say they never ask for financial details.

SUICIDE IS AN HONOURABLE WAY TO DIE, according to Morrissey. Asked if he had ever considered suicide, the Manchester music legend replied, “Yes I have, and I think self-destruction is honourable." He added, "I always thought it was. It's an act of great control and I understand people who do it." In the Radio 4 Desert Island Discs interview, the singer considered sleeping pills to be his luxury item.

A PUBLIC VOTE ON HOW YOUNG OFFENDERS SHOULD BE PUNISHED is being piloted in Greater Manchester. A government website has been set up allowing users to suggest punishments for criminals aged between 10 and 17, ranging from cleaning graffiti to doing charity work. Frances Done, Youth Justice Board chair, said, "Reparation work is vital in helping the young person understand the consequences of his or her actions”. If successful, the scheme will be rolled out nationwide in 2010.

Since Morrisey thinks it´s so honourable, perhaps he´d do the honourable thing and spare us all his inane warblings and his views on what´s honourable or not!
