Wednesday 19 August: Shanty town in the city, Fergie under fire and anti-drugs sailor charged with drug smuggling

Published on August 19th 2009.

A SHANTY TOWN HAS EMERGED in front of the town hall overnight. As part of the ‘Make Manchester Proud’ campaign, the Niall Mellon Township Trust has set up other individual shacks from South Africa around the city centre. The Lord Mayor is expected to attend the opening of the town hall township today at 1pm and the charity is hoping to recruit 70 volunteers for next year’s ‘Building Blitz’ in South Africa.

WYTHENSHAWE RESIDENTS PROTESTED yesterday over their community’s portrayal in last night’s duchess programme. Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is said to have found drugs, crime and a "lack of community spirit" during her trip to Northern Moor, Wythenshawe; the area being an example of “broken Britain”. Residents held a demonstration in Wythenshawe Park, one resident saying, “The preview is portraying Northern Moor as the worst area in Britain to live”.

AN HMS MANCHESTER SAILOR has appeared in court charged with smuggling 12kg of cocaine onboard. The ship had just returned from anti-drugs work in the Atlantic and South Pacific, when Teresa Matos, 36, was arrested after HMS Manchester docked in Plymouth, Devon, on 10 August. Angolan-born Matos appeared before Portsmouth magistrates alongside three men from London.

A WOMAN IS IN HOSPITAL after being shot in the shoulder. Police were called to Belper Street, Salford, on Monday night and found the woman. She underwent emergency surgery at Hope Hospital, but the injury is not believed to be life-threatening. A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Its next to Wythenshawe park but probably is Sale really. Always seemed like a pretty innocuous place to me. There's a well looked-after horticultural gardens in the park, sign of community spirit? SF probably thinks anywhere that doesn't look like Kensington is broken down.

What a good idea Dave, move Northern Moor to Trafford and it will miraculously gain a new media reputation in the land of the caring camaroons.

Is Northern Moor even in Wythenshawe?
