Wednesday 20 August: Golden cyclists to stay, Manchester Airport eyes up Glasgow and more bloody knives C

Published on August 20th 2008.

TEAM GB's Manchester-based gold winners will not be abandoning the city for London's velodrome for the 2012 Games. A spokesperson has said that in practical terms there isn't the office space in the new facility and that everybody on the track programme trains on the roads. Apparently there are really good areas in and around Manchester where the riders can get the conditions they need which wouldn't be the case in London.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT GROUP might start gazing longingly at Glasgow Airport. The company owned by the ten councils of Greater Manchester is on buy alert after the BAA was told to sell off a Scottish Airport by the Competition Commission: Glasgow looks the likely candidate. Manchester Airport Group already owns East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside airports. Trafford Centre owner's Peel Holdings which owns Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Durham Tees Valley Airport and others may be interested too. In the past they have suggested that Manchester Airport be sold to fund condgestion charging.

MORE STABBINGS in Manchester: this time a man was stabbed twice after a row about music volume. A 20-year-old man (now stable in hospital) was approached by his attacker as he stood outside a house in Moston with an older man.The offender told the older men to lower some music before producing a knife and chasing the 20-year-old.

IN WHAT WOULD BE A RARE SWAP across the city Manchester United defender Mikael Sylvestre has been linked with a move to Manchester City.
