MANCHESTER VICTORIA IS TO GET A REVAMP after coming bottom in customer satisfaction ratings. The rail station will share the £50m modernisation pot with 10 other “left behind” stations around England. In the future, Transport Secretary Lord Adonis said it would be up to rail operators to ensure minimum standards are upheld. Network Rail said the improvement programmes would begin as soon as possible.

MANCHESTER MUSIC SERVICE SCOOPS TOP AWARD at the National Music Council awards. As part of the service, Birchfields Primary School and Haveley Hey Primary School took part in a music making opportunity with the Halle Orchestra earlier this year. The Manchester Music Service was awarded the top prize for the quality and diversity of their music provision on offer. Children’s services boss, Councillor Sheila Newman, said: “This award gives us yet another reason to sing from the rooftops about the fantastic creative opportunities.”

TWO MAN UNITED STEWARDS ARE IN COURT after breaking the legs of a Man City fan during the derby match. The fan was allegedly pushed down the stairs after the stewards caught him smoking, Trafford magistrates heard. Mark Roberts, 46, from Oldham, and Paul Stringer, 45, from Runcorn, are charged with causing grievous bodily harm. The case was adjourned until 11 January 2010.

UP TO 127 JOBS ARE TO GO AT MMU due to the “current economic downturn”. Administrative and support staff roles would be cut, and there would be no reduction in teaching or research staff, a spokesman at the Manchester university said.
