<B>Wednesday 6 January:</b> Derby off, theatres carry on and the mysterious moving headstone

A MOTORIST DIES AS THE CITY CONTINUES TO be deluged with snow and ice. The man was killed after two lorries collided on the M60 near Bredbury. The crash caused tailbacks for miles, with other collisions being reported on the M6, M62, M60 and M58. In another serious crash, an ambulance responding to an emergency call careered off a country road in Alderley Edge, with both crew-members making a lucky escape.

TODAY’S FOOTBALL DERBY HAS BEEN POSTPONED because of the weather. Manchester City and United were set to clash in tonight’s Carling Cup semi-final at Eastlands, but safety fears for travelling fans led to the game being called-off. City CEO Garry Cook said, “It was unanimous that it would have been too dangerous to play the game as scheduled.” The rearranged first-leg will be played on January 19.

THEATRES SAY ‘THE SHOW MUST GO ON’ as many stay open despite police advising people not to travel in heavy snow. Performances of White Christmas and Porridge at The Lowry, Swan Lake at the Bridgewater Hall and The Sound of Music at the Palace Theatre still went ahead yesterday.

A SON WAS LEFT HORRIFIED after visiting his father’s grave only to find the headstone had been replaced with another family’s. Robert Bellis’ father Leslie has been buried at Southern Cemetery in Chorlton for 40 years, but on Boxing Day was shocked to discover that the headstone had been moved a few feet away, and a new headstone put in its place.
