Wednesday 12 November: Trouble on the motorway, gynaecologist in trouble and troublesome taxi drivers

Published on November 12th 2008.

AN EIGHT-CAR motorway pile-up caused rush-hour traffic chaos. The incident occurred near junction one of the M60 at Stockport just after 7am this morning. The incident caused a three-mile tailback stretching back to junction 23 at Ashton also affecting other roads around Stockport. The carriageway was re-opened at 9.15am.

A MANCHESTER GYNAECOLGIST faces being struck off following accusations that he performed two unnecessary hysterectomies. Martin Quinn has been suspended from Salford Royal Hospital for six months. Quinn denies the charges which also include failing to act in the best interest of patients.

TWO PRIVATE HIRE TAXI DRIVERS have been prosecuted for illegally trying to pick up passengers in Manchester city centre. City Council licensing officers spotted Mohammed Shafiq trying to pick up passengers outside Bluu Bar on Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter, during a routine city centre patrol in the early hours of Sunday 4 May. Javed Elahi was spotted trying to pick up passengers outside the Printworks on March 8 and May 4 this year. Councillor Richard Cowell said: "We are doing everything we can to crack down on unscrupulous drivers who try to make extra money with no regard for their passengers' safety.”

CARLOS TEVEZ'S 75th minute penalty gave Manchester United the final 1-0 advantage over Queens Park Rangers last night. Sir Alex Ferguson felt the victory was fully deserved and praised his side's attitude throughout a rain-sodden 90 minutes. He told MUTV: “We played with good patience and good speed and stretched them really well.”
