Friday 15 May: From trams to trains, taxi drivers want bus lanes and GMP move into the 21st century

Published on May 15th 2009.

ALTRINCHAM AND ECCLES line tram passengers will have to find alternative ways to commute throughout August. Metrolink's south of Manchester tram system will be closed for the whole of August for improvement works. Officials say they have chosen the quietest month of the year to carry out the expansion and upgrade work, however the Mid-Cheshire Rail Users' Association say trains will not be able to cope with the influx of passengers.

A TAXI DRIVER has started a petition to allow private hire cabs to stop in bus lanes for passengers. Derek Brocklehurst, 38, was fined £30 for driving in a bus lane near Victoria Station but won an appeal in April. He believes that bus lane laws make it difficult for drivers to pull in for passengers. So far he has more than 3,000 names on his petition which he will deliver to Manchester town hall.

HUNDREDS OF SCHOOL CHILDREN will blow thousands of bubbles into the air in Manchester today and tomorrow to observe how built-up areas affect temperature and the climate. The experiment has been put together by the Futuresonic Festival team and the Met Office. The bubble data will be available on the Futuresonic website.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE are undergoing a technological revolution. Officers are to get Blackberry devices to allow them to instantly receive e-mailed intelligence and pictures of suspects. Patrol cars will be fitted with touch-screen computers and broadband internet access. £10m will be spent over the next three years to provide the new equipment.

Hmmm, is it coincidence that a bobby has just got into trouble for using police computers to surf porn mere days before the announcement they're all getting the internet in their cars?
