Friday 31 July: Naked ambition, ID card unveiled and a lucky escape

Published on July 31st 2009.

TWO MANCHESTER AIRPORT-BASED FIREFIGHTERS are soon to undergo the challenge of their lives by rowing 2,000 miles across the Atlantic, naked. Dean Jagger and Neil Gyllenship will only be armed with sun cream and nappy rash ointment to protect themselves from the scorching heat and chafing. Battling against other naked competitors, Team Heatwave hope to raise £100,000 for charity for their two month rowing race.

HOME SECRETARY ALAN JOHNSON yesterday unveiled the national identity card that will be trialed in Greater Manchester at the end of this year. Opposition groups have already said the card is as “costly to our pockets as to our privacy” and a “colossal waste of money”. The Home Secretary said it “will enable the people of Manchester to prove and protect their identity in a quick and secure way”. The £30 biometric ID card will be available nationwide between 2011 and 2012.

A CHEETHAM HILL jewellery shop worker was pinned to the floor and kicked in her stomach by armed raiders who stole £50,000 worth of goods. The victim had a wooden pole held to her throat by the gang, who raided Akash Jewellers. The three men hid in a wall cavity, hours before the shop opened on Tuesday.

A FAMILY IN CHORLTON had a lucky escape after a petrol bomb was thrown into their house. Police said the arson attack on the house in Calverdale Avenue was “clearly deliberate” and “could have proved fatal”. Nobody was injured in the incident.
