Friday 11 April: Afflecks launch, pricey principals and United want to win

Published on April 11th 2008.

AFFLECKS PALACE, is relaunching under the name 'Afflecks'. The shopping outlet will celebrate a new beginning with the Afflecks Day party on Saturday 12 April. The day will include music, art and entertainment with Djs Tom Hingley and Dave Haslam. New owners Bruntwood, bought the business back in February.

SIX new headteachers are to be appointed at a cost of over £1m, two years before the schools actually open. Council chiefs have approved plans for the new staff, who will be hired this summer but won't begin their roles until 2010. Education bosses will replace existing Manchester secondary schools with privately-sponsored city academies.

HALE BARNS residents have won their fight to stop a retail and residential complex being built near to Altrincham town centre. The plan was to knock down the exisiting 60s shopping complex and replace it with a Waitrose supermarket, shopping complex and 51 flats. Following a 9 month debate, an independent inspector rejected the proposals on the basis that they were to grand for the area.

SUNDAY will see two Premier League heavy-weights, Manchester United and Arsenal battling it out at Old Trafford. Speaking about the match, United defender, Wes Brown told MUTV: “I think both teams will go for it on Sunday because neither side really gets anything out of a draw. It'll be one of those days when everyone has to be on form and up for the game. We have to prove to them that we’re the best team in the country."
