<b>Tuesday 11 August:</b> Rochdale man faces death penalty, teachers accused of cheating and Gorton Monastery short-listed

AN EX-PARATROOPER from Rochdale is facing the death penalty in Baghdad after being arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of two of his colleagues. Danny Fitzsimmons, who is accused of killing Paul McGuigan and Darren Hoare after a drunken row, was said to be suffering from post- traumatic stress disorder. An Iraqi military spokesman said the incident is now in “the hands of Iraqi justice.”

A MAN HAS DIED after the car he was travelling in collided with a bus in Oldham. Two passengers on the single-decker bus suffered minor injuries in the accident in Moorside yesterday afternoon. The victim, believed to be in his mid 20s, was taken to hospital but died a short time later. A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in police custody.

THREE TEACHERS at a secondary school in Bolton have been arrested over claims they helped pupils with questions in oral GCSE language exams. The allegations affect 110 pupils studying Spanish, German and French at Little Lever School, which is a specialist language college. The school has said they “take any potential breach of regulations extremely seriously”.

GORTON MONASTERY has been nominated for an international building prize. The building has been short-listed for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors awards which recognise technically-difficult and impressive building projects across the world.. Other nominations for the design award include the new sports hall of Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and the Liverpool One shopping development.
