AITKEN BROTHERTON has brought a test case to Manchester Crown Court. He claims that a reading from a laser gun indicating he was speeding was wrong. The 61-year-old from Lymm, said he wasn’t travelling at 52mph in a 40mph zone. He is bringing into question the legislation covering laser guns. A successful conclusion for Mr Brotherton could lead to thousands of motorists asking for repayment of fines and the annulment of penalty points and bans.

MANCHESTER CONFIDENTIAL’s idea of bringing Brick Man - the colossal work by Antony Gormley – to the region is gaining more and more support. Out of a online poll of 3500 people, more than 3000 support the proposal, a 10-1 result in favour of exploring the scheme further which Confidential is going to do.

THE CO-OPERATIVE BANK, the Manchester-based bank, has seen strong growth in its business despite the economic gloom. This has been put down to its trusted name and its refusal in previous times to get involved with in unreliable investments such as sub-prime mortgage investments. Growth in personal and corporate savings accounts haves soared from nine per cent in 2007 to 40 per cent last year.

TIM GRUNDY has died, aged 50, in hospital. The popular broadcaster was the son of Bill Grundy, also a presenter, who brought the Sex Pistols and Punk Rock to fame in 1976 after an ill-tempered interview. Tim Grundy started work at Piccadilly Radio and broke Chris Evans. He also worked for the BBC and various satellite broadcasters.
