Friday 21 August: Deansgate roadworks anger, Bury's star pupil rejected and 'free booze' offer condemned

Published on August 21st 2009.

A POLICE OFFICER FACES a charge of causing the death of a woman after a police van crashed into her car. Angela Purcell, 38, was in a Seat Ibiza which collided with the vehicle as it answered a 999 call in Patricroft, Salford, on 20 June. PC John Hannan was later charged by the Independent Police Complaints Commission of causing death by dangerous driving and will appear before Bury magistrates on 22 September.

AN A-LEVELS RESULTS PARTY at an Oldham club was called off yesterday because it broke the town’s rules on cheap drinks promotions. Mink nightclub on Fairbottom Street advertised the event with offers of 'free booze', free vodka jellies and buy-one-get-one-free deals. The council and Trading Standards stated: 'The licence holder has now been warned that if Mink runs this promotion, they will immediately be closed down by officers.'

BUSINESSES ON DEANSGATE have told of their anger over the roadworks which they say are losing them trade. Some outlets have reported up to a 50 per cent slump in sales as visitors avoid the noise, smell and traffic. City centre disruption is expected to continue for the next seven months as National Grid is replacing metal gas pipes with plastic ones. The work will end at Deansgate station in March 2010.

A STUDENT WITH SIX A GRADES has been rejected by a string of universities. The Bury Grammar School for Girls student, Philippa Scott, has had five applications to study English literature rejected despite teachers predicting amazing results.

Why should just grades cut it? If she has not been accepted by lots of unis then maybe there is another issue. Maybe they think she is not ready emotionally?

Why are National grid replacing water pipes? I though that was United Utilities' job?

I think you meant the late Ms Purcells car was 'in collision with' the police van.
