<b>Wednesday 2 April:</b> Arndale bridge cracks, hoaxer jailed and hospital makes no bones about it

THE FOOTBRIDGE between the Arndale Centre and Marks and Spencer, is reportedly showing cracks. The glass link replaced the former bridge which was destroyed in the IRA bomb in 1996. An Arndale spokesperson wants to assure the public that although work is due to be carried out on the bridge, there is no safety issue at present.

A BOLTON MAN has been jailed for four years for making hoax 999 calls. David John Mason, 57, rang the emergency services more than a dozen times between January 2006 and April 2007. In the nuisance calls to Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Ambulance Service, he pretended there were sick and injured elderly people and children in need. Constable Ian Deary of Bolton Police, said: “This was not a child, but a 57-year-old man. Mason has been a menace to both the emergency services and the local community.”

BONES which were found beneath an empty building in North Manchester General hospital, were not human. Builders discovered the bones on Monday and immediately contacted police. The bones have been tested by a forensic scientist who concluded they are actually animal bones.

MANCHESTER UNITED took a step closer towards a place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Roma last night. The team was captained by defender Rio Ferdinand. Ex-Reds player Gary Pallister, praised Ferdinand for his leadership. He told MUTV: “Rio was fantastic. I wondered how he would react after Vidic went off injured, but he was absolutely superb.”
