CONGESTION CHARGING is one step closer following government approval of the peak-time charges for entering and leaving Manchester. Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly said: “Today, as a country, we are faced with an unprecedented growth in people's desire to travel. It's essential that we provide people with greater choice over how and when they travel, cut congestion on our roads and take the right decisions for our quality of life, the environment and the long-term health of our economy.”
A POLICE OFFICER has been killed during a training exercise in North Manchester. PC Ian James Terry, 32, was shot as armed officers went through a drill practising the stopping of armed offenders. Acting Chief Constable, Dave Whatton, said: “This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with Ian's family and friends.”
THIRTEEN MANCHESTER secondary schools will face closure if they fail to raise their standards. Less than 30% of pupils at these schools, achieve a minimum of five good GCSEs including English and maths. The Schools Secretary has announced the warning as part of the £400m standards drive. Local authorities will be given 50 days to produce a rescue plan to improve schools in their area.
MARK HUGHES has spoken about his new position as Manchester City football club manager. He told mcfc.co.uk: “It’s a hard task, but what I have always felt is that to give yourself the best opportunity to be successful you have to be physically capable to do the job that’s asked of you.”
