Tuesday 30 June: Taxi driver rapist, schoolteacher arrested, and government back peddles on extra train carriages for Greater Manchester

Published on June 30th 2009.

A 30-YEAR-OLD MAN has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a 20-year-old man was attacked by a bogus taxi driver. The victim was on Quay Street in the city centre when a private hire car with a taxi sign roof pulled over and took him to his property. The man was attacked in the stairwell of his apartment block in Salford Quays. The arrested man has been released on police bail 'pending further inquiries'.

A SCHOOLTEACHER HAS been arrested over alleged indecent images of children. Police quizzed Nigel Hooley, 32, after the pictures were found on his laptop at South Chadderton School, near Oldham. The schoolteacher is also a Tory councillor for the Sale Moor ward and was 'immediately suspended' by Trafford Council. It is not clear whether the school has suspended Mr Hooley.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS done a U-turn on the promised 180 extra train carriages that would ease overcrowding in Greater Manchester. Department of Transport officials have told local transport bosses that they will only be provided with 106 extra carriages. Many suspect the cutback is due to lack of funds. Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority’s (GMITA) chairman has described the reduction as “outrageous”.

TWO 24-YEAR-OLD MEN have been attacked with machetes in an unprovoked attack outside a Rochdale pub. Police say the men were standing outside the Mare and Foal pub in the early hours of Saturday morning when a group of men armed with machetes and iron bars launched 'a horrific and unprovoked attack'.

This N That Wisdom: It's the overtakers that keep the undertakers busy.

These past few weeks have been ridiculous. A plethora of deaths, two plane crashes, rape, paedophillia and murder! I know these things happen yearly but theyre usually a lot more spread out arent they?
