Tuesday 16 December: Head to Salford, voices in the head, foolish benefit cheat and Stockport gets new civic building

Published on December 16th 2008.

THE NEW BBC BOSS of MediaCity in Salford, Peter Salmon, is to speak at a conference at the Lowry, Salford Quays. Salmon is the Burnley-born husband of his more famous wife Sarah Lancashire, and will be leading the transfer of key BBC departments including Sport, Children, Five Live and New Media to Manchester. In a pre-conference event at 5.30pm on 19 January he will be taking questions alongside raconteur and author Stuart McConie famous for his classic north of England travelogue, Pies and Prejudice, which –incidentially - features Confidential editor Jonathan Schofield.

VOICES IN THE HEAD are said to have driven Paul Cusack to kill someone he didn’t know in a Withington flat. 67-year-old Sidney Waller was installing a kitchen at a Mauldeth Road West premises when he was attacked. Cusack pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility at Manchester Crown Court and is due to be sentenced in March next year.

WALTER MITTY CHARACTER, 50-year-old Brian Rawsthorne has been found guilty of fraud and sentenced to a six month conditional discharge. This follows taking part in a 10km run whilst claiming disability benefits and asserting he could only walk a few metres. He had appeared in the MEN talking about how he had lost two-and-a-half stone in training for the race.

STOCKPORT IS GETTING a replacement for the hideous Ponsonby House – subject to planning. The developers Carillion have been recruited to provide a £12m, 40,000sqft, new civic building. The architects will be SMC Corstophine and Wright.

A conditional discharge is disgraceful. Benefit cheats should get prison time.... and then hopefully come out needing disability benefits for real..... Scum of the earth, bleeders of this country!
