Tuesday 28 March: I spy a teen drinker, Manchester outskirts cry-out and Mbia might come here

Published on March 18th 2008.

A RADIO spy network is to be created in Manchester to track down teenage drinkers. The system will link off-licences together so shop owners can warn each other and police youths trying to buy alcohol in the area. The scheme is being launched in north Manchester in areas such as Moston and Harpurhey and if successful could be used across the rest of the city.

SMALL TOWNS need to strengthen their ties with neighbouring cities according to a Centre for Cities report. Greater Manchester and Leeds are both prospering economically whilst nearby areas such as Burnley and Blackburn are really falling behind. The study revealed that poor transport, as well as weak trade links is stopping the wealth of larger cities spilling over into weaker areas.

THREE PEOPLE are in hospital after a chemical spillage at the University of Manchester. The incident took place in a biology laboratory at the Interdisciplinary Biocentre on Princess Street yesterday. Several students were injured in the accident when the chemicals reacted and caused a fire in a fume cabinet. An investigation has begun to establish the cause of the spillage.

MANCHESTER UNITED, Manchester City and Liverpool are all reportedly interested in signing Cameroon midfielder Stephane Mbia. The £5m rated 21-year-old has been quoted saying: “I've received offers from some big clubs, and will think hard about them once the season is over. I have had contacts from Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. Barcelona and Lyon are also interested, as are clubs in Italy.”
