Thursday 18 December: Manchester Uni fourth best, North West great for drinkers and the policeman and the prostitutes

City news in 250 words

MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY is the fourth best in the country in terms of research. Only Oxford, Cambridge and University College London are ahead of Manchester. Alan Gilbert, the president of the university, embarked on an ambitious programme, to grow the prestige of the institution following the merger with UMIST in 2004. This news puts the university head of schedule and well on the way towards the grander aim of becoming one of the top 25 learning establishments in the world.

WE’RE DRUNKS. Or maybe we just know how to party hard. The North West region has England's biggest problem with alcohol. Manchester tops a league compiled by the North West Public Health Observatory, Salford is second. Three other Greater Manchester boroughs, Rochdale, Tameside and Oldham, are in the top ten. The least affected areas are the South East and Eastern regions of England. The figures are said to underline how expensive the problems associated with alcohol are in human and taxpayer terms.

AS MANY AS 700 postal workers will go on a 24 hour strike tomorrow. This will be the last day for posting first class mail before Christmas. Bolton and Stockport will bear the brunt of the action. The strike is over closure plans in those areas and Oldham, in preparation for a new regional distribution centre in Manchester.

A GREATERT MANCHESTER police officer, Pc Robert Bowen, 44, has been charged over his "inappropriate relationships with sex workers". Police sources say that he didn’t employ the services of prostitutes however.

Hmmm - 4th place eh? Well I guess if you buy enough world-class researchers and profs then yes you should get that high up in the rankings. All that remains now is to work out:a) How to continue paying their wages when the cash comes in a lot lower than expectedb) How to pay off that massive deficit caused by aforementioned wage bill + enormous and costly building programmeShould be interesting to see
