Tuesday 24 November: Cabbies dive for cover, city dwellers want say on nightlife licences, and porn firefighters to appeal

Published on November 24th 2009.

A KNIFE CRIME SCHEME WILL GO NATIONWIDE after being piloted in Greater Manchester. More than 40 youngsters caught carrying knives have been confronted with the devastating reality of the damage done by blades, after meeting with doctors, nurses and victims. The initiative will now be extended to other knife crime hotspots in England and Wales.

THE PORN EMAIL FIREFIGHTERS WILL APPEAL against the discipline received after a four month investigation. Firefighters Mark Sapple and Christopher Moss were sacked and a further 11 members of staff were disciplined, with some being demoted for 'sharing unauthorised material'. The Fire Brigades Union confirmed that five of the 13 have decided to appeal but refused to comment further.

CABBIES HAD A LUCKY ESCAPE after a car smashed into the takeaway they were eating in. Taxi drivers eating at Camel One in Rusholme dived for cover as the car raced towards them. CCTV footage shows the silver Audi A4 convertible smash into the entrance before rebounding head on into a parked black cab. Two men ran off. No one was seriously injured, but the damage caused by the smash is expected to cost £15,000.

CITY DWELLERS ARE CALLING FOR MORE INPUT into how bars, clubs and restaurants are granted licences. The call comes after the owners of a restaurant due to open on Liverpool Road compromised on an application for a 4am licence because neighbours were unhappy. One city centre councillor said hearings involving neighbours “could potentially save everyone a lot of time and money.”
