Thursday 13 November: A school girl with a gun, a twisted fire starter and a benefits cheat

A TEENAGE GIRL has been caught with an imitation handgun at school. Police officers were called to Whalley Range High School for Girls on Wilbraham Road. The girl had allegedly brought it in from her father's house. She was not arrested but inquiries are underway.

A DRUNKEN MAN who set fire to a woman's dress on a bus in Manchester city centre has been placed under supervision for two years. Jonathan Trulan, 35, from Rusholme used his lighter to set a fellow passengers clothes alight, twice on the 143 bus on Oxford Road last May. He then sat back in his seat while others rushed to put out the flames. Trulan, who has a history of mental health problems, said he had a vague recollection of 'pratting about' with his lighter.

A MOTHER of two who worked as a legal secretary has walked free from court after being shamed as a benefits cheat. Judge Andrew Gilbart at Manchester Crown Court said: “Benefits of this kind are intended to help people in real distress, and you were not. I accept that you did not spend this money on a lavish lifestyle and it was for the benefit of your two children.” Patricia Mitchell from Fallowfield claimed almost £40,000 in benefits while working full time.

MARK HUGHES is going to spend sensibly when it comes to the next transfer window. He told mcfc.co.uk: “I think that people will understand that we won’t get ripped off. The owner and the chairman are very astute businessmen, so they are not going to be taken for a ride.”
