MPS’ EXPENSES REFORM is set to save the taxpayer £10m annually, but will cost some MPs thousands. Although angry at Sir Christopher Kelly’s proposals, MPs will reluctantly accept them if Westminster is to finally put the damaging expenses scandal behind it. Dubbed “sell the home, sack the spouse”, one North-West MP said, “There have to be changes, but I wonder whether we are in danger of throwing the baby out with the water.”

A POLICEMAN IGNORED CALLS whilst he cruised the red light district. Married PC Robert Bowen was called to break up a fight in the city centre but was “far too interested” in patrolling Piccadilly station area, a court heard. An officer for 26 years, Warrington Crown Court heard how he had developed an unhealthy interest in sex workers. He denied four charges of misconduct in a public office, but pleaded guilty to one of the offences. Bowen will be sentenced later this month.

THE COUNCIL LEADER IS PUSHING political parties to include a high-speed rail link in their election manifestos. Manchester council leader Sir Richard Leese, chairman of HSR UK, believes a network would improve connectivity between the regions and with Europe, and help to solve the economic and environmental challenges facing the next government.

PUBS HAVE STARTED SWITCHING ON THE X FACTOR to bring people in because the show is stopping drinkers from going out. Mitchells & Butlers will be showing The X Factor and offering cheap drink deals in all of its 'Scream' pubs, including The Footage, on Oxford Road.

If I could get on a train in Manchester, not get off, and be in France in under 4 hours, I would certainly do it, often. I've grown to hate airports.

Jay, I would suggest that the question is why would anyone want to visit a scream pub unless they are a student? God, I'm getting old...

Indeed. I've never had trouble getting into The Footage, and I've not been a student for longer than I care to admit.

Just a note to those wishing to visit the Footage or any other scream pub out there. Don't bother unless you've got a student card, because you wont get in.

not true, I went in the footage on Monday night to watch Newcastle on the gigantic TV screen and I don't have a student card.
