Wednesday 29 October: Train crash in Stockport, DNA details stored in Manchester and taxi drivers to raise fares

Published on October 29th 2008.

A MAN has been killed after he was hit by a train in Stockport. The empty passenger train was traveling from Longsight to Crewe at around 5am when the incident occurred. Seven early morning services run by operators including Northern Trains, and Transpennine Express which use the route, were hit by delays totalling 76 minutes. A spokesman said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.

OVER A QUARTER OF A MILLION people in Greater Manchester have their DNA details stored by police according to figures released by the government. Police currently have 251,024 DNA records in the region on the database which was launched in 1995. The records are stored as part of the fight against crime where the National DNA database is used to help catch criminals.

TAXI PASSENGERS may have to pay a surcharge of around 20p because of rising fuel prices. Taxi drivers say that increase plan is because they are out of pocket by £40 a week because of petrol costs. However, with unleaded petrol now as low as 94.9p a litre, passengers are questioning why the surcharge is still being considered.

MARK HUGHES has spoken highly of Brazilian duo Elano and Robinho. Looking back on the performance against Stoke, he told mcfc.co.uk: “They are both creative players, and while Elano’s role in the team has changed he is still embracing what we are trying to do here. He’s been very effective and I was pleased with his performance on Sunday.”

What is anyone other than an employee of railtrack doing on a railway line at 5am if he isn't committing suicide???The driver couldn't exactly swerve ...poor b***ard!
