Tuesday 27 January: Angel of the North artist comes to Manchester, fans chased, drinkers in twisted heaven and Holocaust Memorial Day

Published on January 27th 2009.

ANTONY GORMLEY, famous for his work ‘ Angel of the North’ in Gateshead has unveiled a work in Manchester Art Gallery. Called Filter (2002), it was bought with an £80,000 grant. The work is a suspended, life-size male figure made of cut steel rings welded together. Holes in the rings allow people to view the interior which contains a heart made of a mass of steel balls.

POLICE HAVE released photographs of 49 Glasgow Rangers fans they want to question in connection with rioting on 14 May, last year, during the Uefa Cup final in Manchester. These represent a tiny proportion of the 150,000 or so fans who came down for the match which Rangers lost to Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium.

TODAY IS Holocaust Memorial Day. The Imperial War Museum is focussing on the sombre commemoration and there are tours on the theme throughout the week. The events will culminate with Stand up to Hatred in the Libeskind Room on 1 February at 3.15pm from Dr Mark Levene from the University of Southampton.

THE MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS has uncovered a promotion at Tokyo club in Oldham. Drinkers can consume as much as they want for a single price of £5.99. Amidst the predictable outcry from the health authorities a representative of the club said: “We don’t want to (discount). But before Christmas our competitors started introducing these all-inclusive offers. We had to do something. We’re not making any money from it.” Confidential says: 'you what?'
