Tuesday 10 February: Surveillance in the city, domestic violence deaths and get Madonna before she goes

Published on February 10th 2009.

A GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE COMPUTER SYSTEM is reportedly being designed, under tight security, at an anonymous site in Wythenshawe. The ‘EBorders’ surveillance project will log names, payment details, addresses and dates of movement by air, sea and rail, in and out of the UK for up to ten years. The system is to be used for immigration checks, customs and by police.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE resulted in thirteen deaths last year in Greater Manchester. Police statistics also show that in total, there were more than 68,000 domestic incidents. As part of the ‘Stop The Heartbreak For Domestic Abuse Victims This Valentine’s Day’ police awareness campaign, an advert is being shown on the Skyscraper-screen in Piccadilly until Sunday 15 February.

OWNERS OF A CHINESE FOOD FACTORY in Longsight have been ordered to pay nearly £2,000 for three food hygiene offences. Wok Master Foods Ltd, Birch Lane, failed a routine inspection in January 2008. Mouse droppings were found throughout the premises. Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Environment, said: “The conditions in this factory were completely unacceptable. Manchester residents should feel assured that we are working to protect them.”

TICKETS TO SEE MADONNA at the MEN Arena go on sale this Thursday. The singer will perform two nights in a row at the venue on July 7 and 8. The first date already sold out last week. DJ Paul Oakenfold is the support act for the fully-seated shows. Tickets are priced from £65 to £175 through Ticketmaster on 0844 847 8000.
