Friday 19 September: Labour traffic, MRSA drops, ice rink anger and United ready for Sunday

Published on September 19th 2008.

TRAFFIC ON OXFORD ROAD is disrupted today ahead of what has been billed as Europe's biggest political gathering. Labour's annual party conference kicks off tomorrow in and around Manchester Central, the Midland and Radisson hotels. The conference of around 15,000 delegates, global leaders and members of the national and international press will be held from 20-24 September.

MRSA FIGURES have fallen in Greater Manchester. The number of people infected with the superbug has dropped by 14 per cent, according to new reports. The government has praised NHS staff for their efforts to deep clean hospitals. Across the whole country, the risk of becoming infected with the bug is now at its lowest in five years.

ANGRY RESIDENTS IN ALTRINCHAM have made an official complaint about Trafford Council to the local government ombudsman over plans to build an ice rink in the town. Trafford Council is going ahead with a £150m development which will include a 3,000-seat ice arena, despite protest from local residents who feel their homes have been blighted by the development.

CHELSEA take on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Top-of-the-table Chelsea have been in fine goalscoring form but United defender Patrick Evra is confident the Reds can recover from their sluggish start. He told MUTV: “It's a perfect game, but you don't need to have a lot of pressure. If you win at Chelsea, you don't win the league. If you lose at Chelsea, you don't lose the league as well.”

Why the hell are they spending £150m on a new Ice Rink just a few years after demolishing the last one? Surely they could have just given that a refit. Councils are ridiculous sometimes
