Wednesday 22 July: Confidential on BBC2's Culture Show, £50 council bonus for households, Manchester's mega baby and a toddler stuck up a tree

Published on July 22nd 2009.

THE LAST OF THREE BBC2 Culture Shows is aired at 7pm focussing on Manchester and the International Festival. Features include Vini Reilly of Durutti Column paying tribute to Tony Wilson and Tom Dyckhoff taking a barge to tell the story of Manchester's distinctive architecture. He interviews Confidential editor Jonathan Schofield.

A MANCHESTER WOMAN has given birth to baby boy weighing 12lb and 10oz. Oliver Lau-Ryder is believed to be one of the biggest babies born at Wythenshawe Hospital. His mother, Julie Lau-Ryder, 39, who was in labour for six-and-a-half hours, said at one point she screamed “I don’t want him anymore”. Oliver’s mother, who weighs only 9st, later said, “He was worth the pain”.

COUNCILLORS ARE DECIDING whether to pay £50 into every household in Manchester to help with the recession. The idea was proposed during a meeting of the full Manchester City Council and will now be considered at a meeting of its Executive Committee. The payments would cost about £10m and would eat into the council's reserve funds with the estimated administration costs of paying the money being more than £500,000.

A MACCLESFIELD TODDLER has been dubbed 'spider-boy' after being rescued from a 35ft tree. Two-year-old Finley Bowers was playing with his brother and some older boys during a family picnic at Gawsworth Park, when he became trapped and had to be brought down by firefighters. The toddler was stuck for an hour and vowed, “I’m not going to climb a tree until I’m four”.

£50 a household is nothing. There are 4 bill paying adults in my household, £12.50 will not make a difference to my day let alone my life. Now if the government suspended income tax for one month… that would make a HUGE difference – I would probably blow the lot. And it would probably cost the government far less than they spent on the banks.

Didn't see it. But was JS on with his ManCon head on, or with his Blue Badge head on?

Who in the council seriously believes £50 quid per household is going to help get residents out of the recession. Why do they not grow some balls and spend the £10m communicating to residents that what we need in order to be taken seriously is one representative for Greater Manchester so that London will listen and take our economic and social issues more seriously on the back of one clear direct mandate?Boris may be a Tosser but he gets things done!

Why don't they give us a voucher that only companies in Manchester will accept, in turn giving our local economy a big boost? They could even specify the type of business. Got to be better than that horrendous VAT idea from central government.

I'm all for the £50 as long as it goes to households that pay council tax.

So Confidential makes BBC2 talking about culture, when was the last time that happened to any other Manchester media group?

Yeah, he was "from ManCon", as he talked excitedly at breakneck speed about our fair city.
