Tuesday 1 September: Pensioner goes bull-fighting, pensioner collapses on bus, strike action and tram delays

Published on September 1st 2009.

A SALFORD PENSIONER has restarted his career in Spain as a professional bullfighter. The world’s only English matador, 67-year-old Frank Evans, who has undergone a quadruple heart bypass and has a titanium knee, went back into the ring in the Costa del Sol on Sunday. Ending his four-year retirement, the grandfather-of-five said, “I am as fit as a butcher's dog now."

A PASSENGER STEERED A BUS to safety when the bus driver collapsed behind the wheel. The Arriva’s 263 double-decker bus was travelling towards Princess Street in Manchester city centre on Monday morning when Alex Jenkins realised something was wrong and managed to steer it away from the path of pedestrians. Arriva has sent its "sincere thanks" to Mr Jenkins and said the 73-year-old driver was recovering.

AIRCRAFT REFUELERS AT MANCHESTER AIRPORT have gone on strike in a row over pay. About 29 members of the Unite union are involved in the stoppage, which began early on Monday and will last until 12:45pm today. The decision was taken after a meeting between the union and employers ASIG. Bosses at ASIG insisted there would be no disruption to passengers.

METROLINK’S REOPENING HAS BEEN DELAYED because of an electrical fault. Tram services between Altrincham and Old Trafford will not run on Tuesday morning as scheduled, commuters are being told to use the replacement bus services. Philip Purdy, Metrolink’s director, called the delay “frustrating for passengers and for us…we’ve transformed the Altrincham line." The city centre to Old Trafford section will re-open however.

Bloody joke! Took an hour to get home today instead of the usual 10 minutes and that was on the Eccles line which was supposedly running! Tram crawled along stopping everywhere for no reason then kicked everyone off at Gmex (after being there for 10 mins already) with the annoucement "sorry but I've been ordered to go straight back to Eccles" and what did it do as soon as everyone got off? Went to St Peters Square completely empty! At least the random storm of biblical proportions had just about blown over by that point. Still rubbish though. I thought the buses were bad but this makes them look good!
