Thursday 20 August: Airport's Bank Holiday strike, a missing ear and a wild mink on Deansgate

Published on August 20th 2009.

BANK HOLIDAY STRIKE ACTION has been planned by Manchester Airport’s workers. The action will involve 300 workers, affecting the cleaning, refuelling and baggage-handling departments during one of the summer's busiest periods. Trade union Unite said the action is in support of some of the airport’s lowest paid workers.

HOMELESS DOGS HAVE RECEIVED unwanted duvets from student homes. As part of a pilot scheme ran by Manchester City Council, six van loads of duvets, sheets and blankets were collected from students and given to animal homes in Harpurhey and Sale. Lisa Graham, from Manchester Dogs' Home, said: "The duvets have been put to excellent use by our elderly and injured dogs that require a thicker, softer bed to support their injuries and joints.”

A MAN’S EAR WAS SLICED-OFF by attackers as he made his way to work in Bury. He was attacked in Badger Street, on Wednesday, in what police believe was a targeted assault. Greater Manchester Police has been searching the area for the ear, but officers have been unable to find it. Det Insp Sarah Jackson, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “This was an extremely nasty assault…the victim has now been left without an ear and we need to find the person or people responsible."

A WILD MINK CAUSED CHAOS in a city-centre store by running riot for eight hours. Staff in Blacks store on Deansgate tried to catch the animal with boxes and blankets. A trap containing food finally snared the mink, which was then taken away by the RSPCA.
