Friday 4 September: Gordon Brown agrees to take a pay cut, artillery shell found and 91-year-old woman robbed in Chorlton

Written by . Published on September 4th 2009.

THE PRIME MINISTER WAS ASKED to take a pay cut from a Manchester youngster during a trip to the BBC’s radio studios. Fabian Facey, 21, from Manchester, asked Mr Brown if he would accept a reduced salary along with other politicians if the money was used to help people out of work. Gordon Brown responded: “If there was an agreement that we could all do I would be very much part of that. I am not in this job for the money."

AN UNEXPLODED ARTILLERY SHELL caused chaos to rush-hour drivers in Burnage on Wednesday. The device was found in the garden of a house on Kingsway at 3.15pm. Officers closed both sides of the road, diverting traffic along Fog Lane and School Lane. The area was cordoned-off while the bomb disposal squad investigated the area and later reopened at 6.15pm.

A 91-YEAR-OLD WOMAN had three rings “forcibly removed” from her fingers as she lay in bed. A burglar broke into her house on Withington Road, Chorlton, on Sunday and went into the pensioner's bedroom and demanded cash and jewellery. The offender also punched the woman's son when he confronted him, before escaping, said police. A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed until November.
