Tuesday 29 September: No elected mayor for Manchester and Prince Harry is unimpressive

Published on September 29th 2009.

MANCHESTER HAS VOTED ‘NO’ to the city having its own elected mayor. Over two-thirds of those quizzed rejected the idea to have a democratically elected leader. Of the 3,049 responses from the public, 67 per cent supported a reformed version of the current arrangements, while only 32% backed the elected mayor plan.

FOUR MORE STRIKES ARE PLANNED by bus drivers in an ongoing row over pay. After the latest talks broke down, drivers from Bolton, Wigan and Bury depots told bosses they will strike for the next four Mondays. Staff are furious over ‘zero percent’ pay increase offer.

A MANCHESTER YOUNGSTER was left unimpressed when he met Prince Harry, shortly after scooping the ‘Bravest Child’ award for a genetic condition. When the Royal was first introduced to Alex Burke, the six-year-old asked, "Where's your crown, where's the Prince?" Harry, 25, replied, "I'm here, you have to make do with me." After a few moments, Alex jumped into the Prince’s arms and blew bubbles at him. Harry is a patron of the WellChild charity, which held the awards cermemony in central London.

A MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED after staff at Manchester Airport spotted a bag containing leaking chemicals. The man was arrested on suspicion of endangering an aircraft after police were called to terminal two yesterday morning following reports of a strong smell coming from aircraft-bound luggage. The bag was removed and found to contain two bottles of a chemical, which had leaked. Police are also searching a property in Cheetham Hill.

elected mayor would be a disaster for the city. I'd rather have a mayor who had actually worked at politics for a few years than some chancer TV celeb stroking their ego.

What was the chemical was it that'd leaked, hairspray? A bit of h2o maybe? That kind of article is irresponsible and does nothing but create hysteria, more information please.
