FIREFIGHTERS in the North West are the most abused in the country according to new figures. The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has reported that there were 462 recorded attacks such as shootings and stabbings on fire crews in the North West between 2006 and 2007. The FBU is calling for fire crews to receive training on dealing with violent attacks, and for more money to be invested in protection and crime prevention.
A TEENAGER who was injured in a shooting at a betting shop in Withington last week, has died. The 16-year-old was shot in the chest, shoulder and leg by a masked gunman in the William Hill bookies on Mauldeth Road West. An 18-year-old youth was also hit in the stomach and is still being treated in hospital. Detectives have said that the shootings may be gang-related.
MANCHESTER-based film Control received an award for Special Achievement by a British Talent at last nights Bafta awards. The film was about Ian Curtis of Manchester band Joy Division. Screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh from Prestwich collected the award which he dedicated to the memory of Factory Records boss, Tony Wilson who died last year.
RYAN GIGGS has spoken out about the derby match on Sunday, insisting the better team won. The United winger told manutd.com: “It was probably the result that City deserved really. They played better than us. Defensively we didn't play well. Attacking-wise, we just didn't turn up. We've got to make sure we don't produce any more performances like that.”
