<b>Thurs 17 April:</b> Department stores double armed robbery, the thick thief and Dickie Best passes away

SIMULTANEOUS armed robberies took place at Selfridges and Harvey Nicholls yesterday. Two men carrying claw hammers and a third carrying a holdall attacked the glass counters in Selfridges, Exchange Square just after 11am and stole watches with an approximate value of £400,000. At the same time, two men smashed the glass counters at Harvey Nichols, Exchange Square, stealing watches with an approximate value of £300,000. The five men then left in a red Ford Transit van.

A MAN has been crushed to death whilst changing the wheel of a school bus. Jason Carroll, 37, a tyre fitter from Bolton, was changing the wheel of the 57-seat coach in the Boy's Division of the private Bolton School, when it is believed the jack gave way. Paramedics and fire fighters attended immediately but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

AN IDIOTIC thief managed to lock himself into the £30,000 BMV he was trying to steal in Oldham this week. The 17-year-old boy stole keys to the car after having burgled the owners' house. However, the owners caught him and in a moment of panic he accidentally locked himself in. He remained trapped until the police came to arrest him.

DICKIE BEST, the father of Manchester United football legend George Best, has died at the age of 88. In a statement, his family said: “Dad had his sorrows to bear but he faced them always with courage and dignity.” His son, George Best died in 2005 after battling alcoholism.
