Thursday 5 March: Manchester's substandard stations, Corrie to the Quays and feel the warmth of the dead

Published on March 5th 2009.

BLUNDERING BURGLARS broke through what they believed to be the roof of a bank in Poynton, only to find that they'd actually ended up in the empty shop next door. The would-be robbers had worked through the night, cutting a hole through the floor to lead them to the bank below. Macclesfield Police commented that it was not the slickest of crimes they've seen.

TRAIN STATIONS in Manchester need to improve vastly, according to a passenger perception study by TravelWatch NorthWest. The study reports access problems at Oxford Road station, overcrowding and unhelpful displays at Piccadilly, little attempt to improve Victoria station since 1990 and describes Deansgate as a limited station that is 'the poor relation to Oxford Road.'

COULD CORRIE BE MOVED to wasteland in Salford Quays? Plans are reportedly being discussed to move the entire set, brick-by-brick, cobble-by-cobble, from Granada's base in the city centre to land at Trafford Wharf. If it gets the go ahead, Granada's current base would be sold and staff moved to the site next to the Imperial War Museum North.

MOURNERS at Dukinfield Crematorium will be kept warm by the heat created from burning the dead. Tameside Council has agreed a £400,000 contract to use the high temperatures to power the lights and boiler. So far there have been no religious objections, with the Rev. Vernon Marshall, Unitarian minister at the Old Chapel in Dukinfield telling the MEN newspaper: “It's a lovely way for the dead to provide comfort for the living.”

i went to Victoria station to get to Stalybridge a few days ago. the ticket office man either didn't have the speaker on or it was broken so we had to mime to each other, then i got an interrogating look from the ticket checker and asked - since the boards didn't tell me - which platform to get the train from... "4" was my response. never mind the fact that there were already 2 trains at the platform, and when i asked another person on the platform which one i wasn't exactly spoken to in a polite manner to put it nicely. if people can't work with the public they shouldn't have jobs that deals with them - don't take your anger out on me just because you're miserable - i'm paying through the nose so you can get your monthly wage!!

I don't understand why everymorning I have to show my ticket in order to access the platform only to be required to show it to an on board conductor within minutes of he train setting off. Surely only one or the other is required? I also had one ticket inspector being so heavy handed in blocking people from getting by that he almost knocked me onto the tracks.

Yeah that's them, the ticket checkers, I'd assumed they were Northern Rail staff. I saw one of them pretty much tackle someone yesterday.

Its not the Northern Rail staff so much as the OCS security staff, who help with ticket control. They're appalling, rude, aggressive, sometimes drunken. I've got into two near fights at Victoria when trying to hand in my ticket. They also rarely wear photo-ID, and I'd be surprised if they have SIA training.

I'd go further on the trains stations, they should train their staff in the art of customer service, or at least just explain what manners are. I travel into Piccadilly Station daily and the Northern Rail staff there are some of the rudest people I've ever met.

Who remembers The King? Now that was a pub, before the NQ was the NQ. No hipsters in there.
