Monday 6 April: Council quizzed on climate change and benefits cheat wears cheeky socks to court

Published on April 6th 2009.

A 'CALL TO REAL ACTION' report was launched today demanding the council get 'real' in tackling climate change. Written by citizens in response to the council's Call to Action, it highlights how other cities are well ahead of Manchester in keeping green. Author Marc Hudson said: “Manchester is still talking about tackling climate change while other cities are getting on with practical actions.”

A 20-YEAR-OLD WOMAN was raped after getting into a 'taxi' following a night out in Stockport in the early hours of Sunday. The driver pulled over in Longsight and attacked her. Police want to speak to a man who went to Longsight police station shortly after the attack. The white car had a private hire sticker on it, police said. The attacker was mixed race, aged about 30 with black spiky hair.

A BENEFITS CHEAT turned up in court wearing socks that say 'show me the money'. Wythenshawe mum-of-three Sylvia Rogers used her Jobseeker's allowance to invest in high-interest bank accounts, accumulating a wealth of £60,000. The 50-year-old with previous shoplifting convictions later said wearing the socks had been a coincidence. “It never came into my head that I had them on,” she said.

A MANCHESTER CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL could be on its way. Paul and Emma Morris of The Chocolate Café in Ramsbottom are planning to set up the festival after their successful Ramsbottom Chocolate Festival last weekend. The couple have signed a lease for a branch in Deansgate with plans to open next month.
