Tuesday 2 September: Manchester dominates transfer window, waste revolution and can Trevor Sorbie cut it?

Published on September 2nd 2008.

A MANCHESTER city centre youth hostel was deliberately set alight over the weekend. Arsonists started the blaze at Grafton Hotel, just off Oxford Road on Saturday evening. No one was in the building at the time. Det Insp Laura Burgess told the BBC: "This was a large fire in a busy part of the city and it could have easily spread further.”

A WASTE REVOLUTION is set to hit Manchester. If it gets the go ahead, Manchester could become Britain’s greenest city. All waste would be collected by bin men on the same day and everything that can be recycled will be. Plans to charge people who don’t recycle have now been scrapped.

CELEBRITY HAIRDRESSERM Trevor Sorbie is opening a new salon in Manchester city centre. The new salon is due to open in early October at 19 Spring Gardens and will rival other Manchester celebrity stylist salons such as Nicky Clarke and Vidal Sassoon.

THE FOOTBALL TRANSFER WINDOW saw two dramatic last minute signings last night, as Manchester City signed Real Madrid’s Robinho for a British record £32.5m payment and Manchester United paid £30.75m for Spurs' Bulgarian striker Berbatov. City made the last minute signing after earlier agreeing to a takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group. Delighted manager, Mark Hughes told mcfc.co.uk: “In order to compete with the best teams in the Premier League we have to be in the market for players of this calibre, and Robinho is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.”
