Monday 2 March: First Hollywood, now Boyle takes Radcliffe, plus evil cheating Oxford University

Published on March 2nd 2009.

DANNY BOYLE showed off his Oscar for Best Director for Slumdog Millionaire at its natural home yesterday: a social club in Radcliffe. Boyle joined his dad, 87-year-old Frank and his twin sister Maria at the St Mary’s Catholic Social Club. Locals queued up to have their photograph taken with the statuette. Boyle admitted the Oscar had seen some action since he won it: “It’s picked up a bit of damage,” he said.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT is to lose jobs. Up to 90 positions will go and the existing 305 staff will need to reapply for their posts. The decision follows a review of the employment structure at the airport. The redundancies are the result of a decline in passenger numbers. Unions will be consulted to try and ensure there are no compulsory redundancies.

NAUGHTY CORPUS CHRISTI, Oxford, fielded an ineligible contestant in the University Challenge final which was broadcast last week. Turns out that one of the Oxford team, Sam Kay, had not been a student there since June last year. The University of Manchester team has said that they will still concede the final as they had been fairly beaten on the day. The BBC is investigating how Kay remained in the Corpus Christi team.

MANCHESTER UNITED won the Carling Cup at Wembley yesterday. This follows success at the World Club Championship and is the second piece of silverware out of a possible record-breaking five. United beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on penalties after the match remained goalless following extra time.
