Thursday 30 April: Hole in the road, 90 passengers back from Mexico and canal gets cocooned

Published on April 30th 2009.

A BIG HOLE has appeared in the middle of a main road in Manchester. Motorists have been delayed due to the damage on Barlow Moor Road in Didsbury. An investigation is underway into how the tarmac gave way, exposing a two metre wide gaping hole.

NINETY PASSENGERS arrived at Manchester Airport from Mexico this morning, after leaving early to escape the swine flu outbreak. Health Protection Agency medics met passengers after the World Health Organisation raised the alert to level five - one below a pandemic. Passengers were told to look out for any symptoms of flu and to contact their GP if they had any concerns.

A £200,000 FENCE is to be built around the length of the exposed canal in Manchester's gay village area. The council has applied to build a 3ft 6 high post-and-rail fence with reinforced glass panels to fill the gaps and prevent people from sitting on the wall. Manchester coroner Nigel Meadows urged town hall chiefs to act after a man died after slipping and falling into the water in Canal Street over a year ago.

EQUIPMENT USED TO GROW CANNABIS is now being used by charity workers to grow vegetables. Police seized the drug dealing equipment from a cannabis farm in Macclesfield. Volunteers at the Rossendale Trust in Sutton then asked if they could have the lighting, heating and irrigation systems. Sgt Pete Carter said: "It is really satisfying to see it being diverted into an area where it has a useful purpose."

About that hole in the road, the pics are great. People just standing around looking at a hole in road, so English. Makes me feel all warm inside.

They will be baby-proofing the whole city before you know it. What's next, foam cushioning on the corners of all buildings in case anyone bumps into them???
