Published on November 4th 2008.

A WOMAN has been attacked in Chorlton as she walked home from a fancy dress party. The incident happened at around 3am on Saturday. The 34-year-old victim, who was dressed as the 'Joker' from Batman, was walking along Keppel Road when two men began shouting threats and then head butted her. She suffered a serious eye injury and bruising. Witnesses are asked to call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

FIVE BRONZE PANELS have been stolen from a war memorial in an East Manchester cemetery. The panels had the names of dozens of servicemen and women engraved on them and will cost £10,000 to replace. The War Graves Commission has said thefts of this nature are on the increase because of rise in price of raw materials.

ALBERT SQUARE is undergoing repairs on its clock and Christmas tree. The Town Hall clock stopped yesterday for the the first time in three years. Engineers were sent to fix the clock which is widely regarded as second to Big Ben in the country. Albert Square's Christmas tree also arrived last week but had to be taken down because of safety fears over a split trunk. The tree will be replaced in time for Friday's lights switch on.

MICK HUCKNALL of Simply Red fame is set to lose around £25,000 on Manchester United memorabilia he is auctioning off. The singer paid £29,000 for a pair of signed football boots belonging to David Beckham. The boots are expected to sell at auction for between £3,000-£5,000.

whoever stole these panels will no doubt be a local scally or at least someone from the north west.i wonder how many scrap dealers there are in the northwest that are willing to take them ???i might do me some research and send them each a mail and see if we can't catch the little fu**ers!

I can't believe that theres been more attacks in Chorlton. I moved there earlier this year to get out of Levenshulme as I thought that was too rough. What is the world coming to?

The story about the war memorial is disgusting - whoever did it & whoever profits from it should be ashamed of themselves. However, the Mick Hucknall story has cheered me right up.

What is the clock regarded as second in the country to Big Ben at doing? Telling the time?
