Tuesday 19 February: West Didsbury knife attack, job cuts for Trafford Hospital and no joy for Nani

Published on February 19th 2008.

A VICIOUS hammer and knife attack took place in West Didsbury yesterday evening. Two men are now in hospital after a fight broke out at 5.15pm in the alleyway between Blockbuster Video and Pizza Express on Lapwing Lane before continuing onto Danesmoor Road. The first man suffered a puncture wound to his face and collar bone and the second man suffered a small wound to his back. They were both taken to hospital where they remain in a stable condition.

GREATER MANCHESTER NHS trust may be forced to axe over 200 jobs because of major financial problems. Trafford General Hospital has been suffering for many years and bosses are not ruling out redundancies and ward closures as a way of avoiding further debt. Unions are blaming mismanagement and the Governments attempt to turn hospitals into businesses.

A CHESHIRE village is up in arms after announcements that a 7,000-home town is to be built in the middle of it. Residents in Wardle are angry about the plans which would see the green-field area of Cheshire transformed into a bigger town with more facilities. Villagers are planning a protest on Saturday through Wardle.

THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION will not be taking action against Arsenal captain William Gallas over his confrontation with Manchester United winger Nani in the match last Saturday. United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson felt the referee should have booked Gallas for kicking Nani from behind in the match at Old Trafford. The FA say there isn’t enough evidence of violent conduct.
