Thursday 17 July: Crime figures out, strikes continue and Manchester City feng-shui

Published on July 17th 2008.

CRIME FIGURES are down according to the annual figures released today by Greater Manchester Police. Between April 2007 and March 2008 total crime is down 10 per cent with 34,588 fewer victims. However, knife crime in Greater Manchester is still third highest in the country. Assistant Chief Constable Dave Thompson said: “I am pleased with the continued reductions in crime that we have achieved despite the challenges we have faced.”

UNION STRIKES continue today with 98,000 council workers staging a walk-out across the north-west over a 2.45% pay rise offer. Dave Prentis, General Secretary of Unison said: “Millions of pounds of council taxpayers’ money is frittered away by councils. They are being forced into employing expensive agency staff. There is a solution – pay staff a decent wage and make working for local councils a job of choice.”

MANCHESTER’S Co-operative Group have bought grocer Somerfield in a record-breaking deal. The combined food business will operate more than 3,000 grocery stores making it a market leader and the fifth largest food retailer in the UK. The Co-operative Group chief executive Peter marks has said it has put the Co-op back in the premier league of grocery retailers.

MANCHESTER CITY has undergone a feng-shui style makeover in a bid to fill the stadium with positive energy. Crystals have been buried under the pitch and more are to be buried under the corner flags to energise players. The changes are apparently down to Thai owner Thaksin Shinawatra.
