MANCHESTER AIRPORT HAS BEAT STIFF COMPETITION by being voted “Airport of the Year”. Voted for by industry experts and travel agents, the Travel Trade Gazette award follows the unveiling of Manchester Airport’s £80 million redevelopment across Terminals 1 and 2 earlier this year including £25 million to transform security. The airport’s managing director, Andrew Cornish, said the award was “a real tribute to the efforts of the 19,000 people who work at Manchester Airport”.
A STUDIO SET UP BY LATE BROADCASTING LEGEND John Peel, has been given two prestigious English Heritage Blue Plaques. The DJ, who passed away in 2004, helped set up Tractor Sound Studios on Market Street in Heywood. Rochdale's Suite 16 Studios, which were used by Echo And The Bunnymen and Happy Mondays, have also won a blue plaque.
JJB HAVE REPORTED RECORD LOSSES for the six months to July, after admitting it was close to going bankrupt. The £42.9m loss at the Wigan-based sportswear giant compares to £14.8m in the same period last year. JJB, together with Sports Direct International, is being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) over a suspected sports retail cartel. One retail expert said the future was looking “very bleak” for the company.
