Tuesday 22 December: GMP slated, Oasis gig cabbie fined and new tram tested

Published on December 22nd 2009.

GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE IS SLATED in a report that compares it with five other similar forces. In the British Crime Survey, the area ranked either bottom or next to bottom in four national tables, with a higher rate of robbery, burglary and car crime than the five other ‘similar’ forces. Police chiefs insist Greater Manchester has more crime because it has some of the most deprived areas.

OASIS GIG CABBIE IS FINED for picking-up fans as they left Heaton Park in June. Despite not being allowed to take passengers from the street, town hall licensing officers spotted Biswajit Pal, 44, trying to pick-up two passengers and offering to take them into the city centre for £20, double the normal rate. Pal was fined a total of £2,581 after being found guilty of a hire offence and having no insurance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

METROLINK PASSENGERS BOARDED a new £2m tram yesterday. The yellow and silver tram has been introduced on the Eccles line and is the first of up to 40 that will be running when the network expands in two years. Councillor Keith Whitmore, chairman of the Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority, said: “The new tram is an important part of a bright future for Metrolink.”

A BREAKDOWN RECOVERY DRIVER WAS KILLED when he was hit by a car on the M60 in Sale. The 60-year-old man was working on a broken down vehicle at the time of the accident. He died later in hospital from his serious injuries.

What about the rest of the cabbies that ripped everyone off? Seems unfair that only one has gotten into any trouble.

Jinkies... just a thought... possibly some others taken to court on another day??

ODecember 22nd 2009.

Jinkies... obviously Mr Pal was the only one caught. What is your point?

I bet Councilor Keith Whitmore was up all night thinking of that statement!
