Thursday 7 May: Christie campaigners at Downing Street, swine flu in the region and home zoo-keeper jailed

Published on May 7th 2009.

CHRISTIE CAMPAIGNERS are at Downing Street today to hand in a 100,000-name petition which demands that Christie Hospital gets back the £6.5m it lost when an Icelandic bank collapsed. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme previously turned down the Manchester hospital's claim.

A COMPENSATION DISPUTE over the £4.3m awarded to a young footballer following a tackle that ended his career, is underway at Manchester's Civil Courts. Manchester United youth player, Ben Collett's leg was broken in a 2003 reserve game against Middlesbrough who then went on to admit liability. However, Boro are now challenging the amount of compensation after questioning whether Collett would ever have made it into the first team. Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that Collett's future was “entirely dependent upon how he performed in the adult game.” The hearing continues.

GREATER MANCHESTER'S FIRST CASE OF SWINE FLU has been confirmed. A woman from Tameside who recently returned from a holiday in Mexico is being treated for the H1N1 virus at home. Her family are also being treated with antiviral medication and doctors say the woman is responding well to treatment.

A MAN WHO TURNED HIS HOME INTO A ZOO has been jailed for three months and banned from keeping animals for five years. John Ord Clark's semi-detached house in Oldham housed over 1,000 exotic creatures including lizards, frogs, parrots, dogs and boa constrictors. The 42-year-old was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to animals, failing to meet the needs of an animal and also keeping an unlicensed pet shop.
