Friday 9 October: Cameron’s speech, X-Factor fireworks, Hazel Grove Melanie Hall connection and Mancunian Way closure

Published on October 9th 2009.

CAMERON WILL END BIG GOVERNMENT and create a “responsible society” if the Conservative party is elected. In his final conference speech before the general election, the Tory leader said he had the character, temperament and judgment to be Prime Minister. Brighter times would follow if Britain took some tough Tory medicine, Cameron telling delegates, “I know that today there aren't many reasons to be cheerful. But there are reasons to believe.”

X FACTOR WINNER WILL SWITCH ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS this year. ‘Hallelujah’ singer Alexandra Burke will switch on Manchester city centre’s lights, launching a season packed with entertainment and shopping, which includes the return of the famous Christmas markets and last year’s Spinningfields’ ice rink. The Albert Square switch-on will take place between 7pm and 8pm on 12 November.

A MAN IS BEING HELD OVER BONES FOUND beside the M5 in Bristol. The 37-year-old, from Hazel Grove, is believed to have walked into Cheadle Heath Police Station at 2.45am on Thursday and said he wanted to talk to officers about Miss Hall's death. The man is now being held on suspicion of murdering Melanie Hall who disappeared in 1996 after she left a nightclub in Bath.

THE MANCUNIAN WAY WILL BE SHUT both ways this weekend, due to maintenance work. The closure, to the A57M south of the city centre, takes place between 6am and 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Diversions will be in operation along Fairfield Street, Whitworth Street, Whitworth Street West, the Bridgewater viaduct and Chester Road.

Yes indeed....it really was held 6am-6pm....my word, it took 20 mins to get from Picc Stn to the Deansgate (locks). Manchester Council - what is the story here? Why? I realise the SF was on at night but...why couldn't this of started earlier?
